6 Steps to Avoid Internet Bank Fraud

Internet bank fraud is a growing problem. As more people discover this convenient, time saving technology, Internet bank fraud becomes a greater danger. Protect yourself by following these steps.
  1. Use a separate password for Internet bank accounts. Do not enter it into shared computers, or over an unsecured wireless connection.
  2. Do not give your password to anyone who claims to be a customer service representative from your bank- a true customer service person does not need your Internet bank password.
  3. Do not click links on emails that appear to be sent from your bank. Many real-looking emails actually send you to phony sites that look authentic, then transmit your password directly to thieves.
  4. Be careful which websites you visit and when downloading of freeware and shareware. Key logger spyware can capture your bank passwords and transmit them.
  5. Don't leave your IM windows open when you are not at your computer. Internet messaging programs work as back doors through your Internet security system.
  6. Do not answer emails purporting to be someone from an African or Pacific Island nation who needs help withdrawing money to their account. This type of Internet bank fraud is known as the "Nigerian bank scam".
Some Internet bank fraud schemes involve advertising on online bulletin boards. If you receive a request to use your bank account, or disclose bank information, this may be Internet bank fraud. Flag these ads to the webmaster.
